Daily Themes App

Prompt for daily themes application:  Describe a specific scene or event from two different points of view. Think about what each person might see. Locate each narrator in a specific place that affects his or her perspective, and convey each response to the scene through the details you include. Write two separate paragraphs, one from each point of view. 150-200 words each, 400 words maximum.

Response (based in part on a true story):
Rashid hopped onto the train as the steel doors slammed shut behind him.  He turned and waved a quick goodbye to Markus before plopping down onto the cold, hard plastic.  The A train jerked him downtown a lot faster than he expected, his head still swimming, seconds after his stop.  "Must've been those 12 beers," he thought to to himself as he stumbled off the train.

Those beers were well-deserved.  Rashid had saved up from his three campus jobs just to fly out to New York for a weekend and visit his girlfriend, Gabriella, on her birthday.  He had skipped two shifts at the bookstore and an exam, only to have her break up with him during the cab ride from JFK to the hotel.  She was studying at NYU for a semester, and being an exchange student at Oregon State himself, she was the only person he knew in the city.  "That bitch," he muttered as he slowly climbed the stairs up to the street.

Tonight had still been a good night though.  Rashid had met Markus - his only friend in an ocean of strangers.  Markus was one of Gabriella's friends and had been nice enough to hang out with him the whole day.  They had even spent the night at Connolly's Pub, where Markus kept Rashid from completely drowning in his sorrows.  Unlike Gabrielle, Markus is a good person.  "Tomorrow I can spend the entire day with him," Rashid thought happily to himself.

Markus watched Rashid fall to the yellow seats, just as the A train whisked by.  "Finally, this loser is gone," Markus thought to himself, as he ran up the stairs to head back to Connolly's.  He had spent the whole day with Rashid as a favor to Gabriella.  "What the hell had she seen in him?" he wondered as he turned the corner and entered the pub.  Whatever it was, he didn't care.  Markus was so relieved to be done for the night.  He had actually ended the night early, telling Rashid he was planning on going to bed when they went to the subway earlier.  He threw off his coat and found Gabriella waiting for him at the bar.  "Is he gone?" she asked.  "Long gone," he said as he leaned in for a kiss.
